In his message at Together for the Gospel 2008, C.J. Mahaney stated that every pastor should not only read, but memorize chapter 10 (Want of Faith) from Charles Bridges' book, The Christian Ministry. Here are the passages from that chapter that C.J. quoted:

All our failures may be ultimately traced to a defect of faith....The life of faith, therefore, is the life of the Minister's work, and the spring of his success....The main difficulty, therefore, is not in our work, but in ourselves; in the conflict with our own unbelief....Difficulties heaped upon difficulties can never rise to the level of the promise of God.

It is faith that enlivens our work with perpetual cheerfulness. It commits every part of it to God, in the hope, that even mistakes shall be overruled for his glory ; and thus relieves us from an oppressive anxiety, often attendant upon a deep sense of our responsibility. The shortest way to peace will be found in casting ourselves upon God for daily pardon of deficiencies and supplies of grace, without looking too eagerly for present fruit.

Hence our course of effort is unvarying, but more tranquil. It is peace — not slumber, rest in the work — not from it. Unbelief looks at the difficulty. Faith regards the promise. Unbelief therefore makes our work a service of bondage. Faith realizes it as a " labour of love." Unbelief drags on in sullen despondency. Faith makes the patience, with which it is content to wait for success, " the patience of hope." As every difficulty is the fruit of unbelief; so will they all ultimately be overcome by the perseverance of faith.

Read the book online (or download the PDF) at Google Books.

C.J. ended his message with another quote - from Charles Spurgeon:

“Moreover, labor is easy to those of a cheerful spirit; success waits on cheerfulness. The ones who work while rejoicing in God and believing with all their hearts have success guaranteed.”

Some of my favorite quotes:

Homiletics Lesson #1 - When you have nothing to say, just repeat it louder and louder until the crowd is in a frenzy.

Homiletics lesson #3 - If you lack the authority that comes with the truth, garner authority by screaming and then staring into the camera like a serial killer.

He's selling a book called "7 Simple Laws of Increase, Guaranteed". I'm not a financial professional, but it would seem like step #1 should be "Don't Mail Checks to Scam Artists Selling Books".

After all the prosperity gospel stuff, Ed Young, Jr. seems like Charles Spurgeon.

Q. How do bank machines work?
A. Well, let's say you want 25 dollars. You punch in the amount and behind the machine there's a guy with a printing press who makes the money and sticks it out this slot.
Q. Sort of like the guy who lives up in our garage and opens the door?
A. Exactly.

Q. What causes the wind?
A. Trees sneezing.

Q. Why does ice float?
A. Because it's cold. Ice wants to get warm, so it goes to the top of liquids to be nearer to the sun.
Q. Is that true?
A. Look it up and find out.
Q. I should just look up stuff in the first place.

Q. How come you know so much?
A. It's all in the book you get when you become a father.

These posters were designed by Ministry Growers to illustrate Jesus' radical message of love.

Our Modern American Minds are Callous to the Revolutionary Message Jesus is Telling

We can't understand Jesus' words because we have it so easy. Let's take a minute to remember who he was talking to. Jesus was talking to a group of Jews under the iron fist of the Roman Empire. Many of these people had their sons and daughters, brothers and sisters slaughtered, killed, and murdered by the powers that be. Jesus is telling them to pray for those who persecute them? This message just took on a whole different level of depth. Jesus is calling us to love those who don't deserve it, because we don't deserve it.

But realize that the freedom in Christ is so profound it allows you to love the worst, most vile people ever...Because He first loved you, and nothing else matters.
